Historical roses

This film is about the world of historical roses. For many, they are special garden treasures because of their beauty, their wonderful fragrance or their sometimes mysterious origin. But what actually makes a rose an "old," or historic, rose?
"They include the representatives of all rose classes that originated before the first modern teehybrids, i.e. before 1867. Gallica roses, Alba roses or Damask roses, for example, are among them," explains Hella Brumme, the former director of the Europa-Rosarium, a proven expert in the field of historic roses. She knows the answers to all questions about the old rose classes: For example, what stories entwine around the origin of some varieties, what exactly accounts for their charm to this day, and what is it about the legendary Chinese garden roses that came to Europe as "tea roses" in the 19th century and revolutionized breeding in Europe?

Hella Brumme and Sabine Zessin explore these questions and immerse the audience in the colorful world of old roses.
